A broch is a huge stone-built tower, lived in by people in Scotland during the Iron Age. It has double walls with staircases running up in-between, dividing walls and partitions in the interior and its own well. Although it looks very strong, it was probably not used for defense but instead to display the wealth and status of the inhabitants – finds from inside the broch include sherds of amphorae that once held high-quality Roman liqueur wine.

Outside, it is surrounded by huge ditches and ramparts and has its own 'broch village' – a selection of smaller houses clustered around the outside, which is reminiscent of a Norman Castle and its keep.
